English Bulldogs: English Bulldogs are wide, medium sized, compact dogs with short legs. Their body and head are massive with extra skin on both the skull and forehead falling in folds. Their cheeks extend to the sides of their eyes. Their muzzle are wide, short and broad. Their black noses are broad with large nostrils. Their dark eyes are deep set. Their ears are small, thin and set high on the head. Their jaws are massive, very broad, and square with hanging upper lips. Their teeth should have an under bite. Their tails are either straight or curled and carried low. Their short, flat coats are straight, smooth and glossy. Coat colors include red brindle, and other shades of brindle, solid white, solid red, fawn, pale yellow or brownish red or white or a combination of these colors.
Although English Bulldogs appear to be somewhat intimidating, they are among the gentlest of dogs. Just the same they will send off any intruder, and few would risk a close encounter with a dog as brave as English Bulldogs. They are very affectionate and dependable, gentle with children, but known for their courage and excellent guarding ability. Bullheaded and determined, English Bulldogs can be very persistent. They do not give up easily. Bulldogs are very much people dogs seeking out human attention and loving every bit they can get! English Bulldogs are good with family pets, but some can be combative with strange dogs if they feel threatened. When English Bulldogs are young, they are full of energy, but slow down as they get older. English Bulldogs can snore.
English Bulldogs originated in the British Isles, descended from the ancient Asiatic mastiff. English Bulldogs were given the name "bull" because their robust look of a little bull.
